Guided by Nature

7 - 17 October 2024

A synergistic exhibition showcasing the finest South Korean craftmanship from Gallery Lloyd Choi, set against the backdrop of Cox London’s nature-inspired, sculptural collection of lighting, furniture, and objects. This partnership honours the flow state harnessed by craftspeople guided by the wisdom of nature.

Cox London creations emerge from a state of flow that fuses together principles of purpose, continuous improvement, embracing imperfection, and allowing the mind to wander freely. As a result, each piece reflects the cadence of the maker through marks, imprints and striations that render an intentional thread of connection from the maker to the object. We often speak of the nature within; from the natural world that inspires us, to the nature of the maker and materials and the way mankind is compelled to create something from nothing.

Lloyd Choi Gallery represents contemporary Korean artists and designers whose practice is rooted in craftsmanship. In ancient Eastern philosophy, many thinkers sought peace during tumultuous times sharing the belief that inner turmoil often stems from within rather than from external circumstances. The mind, crowded with thoughts, can be liberated though the act of craft by emptying it, freeing oneself from the ego. The concept of Mu-shim—a Korean term meaning “emptying one’s mind”—refers to a state of egoless awareness that continues to influence South Korean artisans today. These creators work in harmony with nature, a force beyond our control, teaching us patience and humility.

Mu-shim무심 ; meaning empty one’s mind in Korean and refers to the egoless mind.
