‘Lost in Tradition’ describes a sense of contemplation and mindfulness and gives viewers the opportunity to lose themselves in traditional values that embody an appreciation of art and life.
'Lost in Tradition' features artists working with the traditional mediums of ceramics, metal, mother-of-pearl, textiles, wood, and antique furniture. Many are represented in internationally renowned museum collections, including maker of charismatic porcelain Moon Jars, Yun Ju-cheol. Yun has invented a tactile surface decoration known as ‘Cheomjang’ inspired by the 15th Century ‘Guiyal’ technique.
Another celebrated ceramic artist, Park Sung-wook, employs the traditional white slip ‘Buncheong’ technique, a short-lived style that emerged in the early Joseon Dynasty period, creating a unique monochrome palette for his ceramic painting.
Kim Hyun-ju, an innovative female metal artist, combines metal work with the traditional application of mother-of-pearl. Kim’s explorations into colouring metal led her to this unconventional material pairing and her stunning works can be found in public collections in South Korea, the USA, and the UK.
Alongside works by established artists, ‘Lost in Tradition’ presents works by the gallery’s new artists who are exploring Joseon Porcelain with a contemporary twist. Shin Dong-boem adopts modern technology to lend a subtle cobalt glaze to his simplified traditional Mae-byeong vessel, while Yusun Won opens up new viewpoints on the traditional form.
