Kim Dong-wan South Korea, b. 1992
Kim is an innovative young artist who combines his principle skill of glass blowing with the traditional Korean lacquering technique of ottchil. Kim creates beautiful blown glass forms, then, aiming to bring vitality and depth, he meticulously applies layers of lacquer. Following an extended drying process, Kim then polishes each piece, using different tools with varied pressures and speeds, exposing multiple layers of coloured lacquer. The affect is a uniquely mesmerising, complex abstracted finish. Each piece demonstrates an ‘excavation of process’, exploring how these two highly traditional skills can work together in contemporary practice.
